SUNY Potsdam gearing up for its 21st Annual Scholarship Golf Classic

SUNY Potsdam is preparing for its 21st Annual Scholarship Golf Classic, an event designed to increase awareness and funding for student scholarships, that will be held on Thursday, Sept. 10, at the Potsdam Town and Country Club. The 2008 Scholarship Golf Classic raised more than $50,000 for SUNY Potsdam’s scholarship fund. Last year, the College awarded more than $2.2 million in scholarships to more than 900 students. “Currently, 85 percent of all students receive some type of financial aid. The College’s goal is to support 100 percent of these deserving students,” said Dr. John F. Schwaller, president of SUNY Potsdam. “Through the generosity of individuals and organizations throughout the region, we hope to make this a reality.” The golf format is a shotgun start at 10 a.m., with a six-person scramble that includes three flights for men and one for women, to be determined by total team handicap. Golfers are encouraged to form their own sixsomes, and golfers of all abilities and handicaps are encouraged to participate. Team prizes will be awarded in each flight and prizes will be given for many contests on the course and there will be special contests available that could mean major cash for some talented golfer. The silent auction, one of the highlights of the day, will be held immediately following the tournament, around 5 p.m. The auction includes sports merchandise, technology, gift certificates, golf equipment and several other unique and in-demand items. All proceeds will benefit SUNY Potsdam’s Scholarship Fund. Registration is $125 per person and includes a scholarship gift, 18 holes of golf, cart, lunch, refreshments, door prizes, a banquet dinner and course and team prizes. Teams will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. Pre-registration is necessary for all golfers. Early registration is strongly encouraged. The deadline for registrations is August 28. If golfing isn’t your thing, but you’d still like to contribute, consider becoming an event sponsor. The levels of sponsorship are Summit Sponsor, $8,000; Mountain Sponsor, $4,000; Navigator Sponsor, $2,000; Adirondack Sponsor, $750; Flag Sponsor, $350; Tee Sponsor, $150; or Silent Auction Item or a Gift In-Kind, $50 value or more.
