A series of exciting concerts will be held during the 37th season of the Crane Youth Music (CYM) Summer Program beginning on Monday, June 29, and continuing through Saturday, July 11, at SUNY Potsdam’s Crane School of Music. In addition to several performances by CYM students and SUNY Potsdam faculty, the Potsdam Brass Quintet, Orchestra of Northern New York featuring the Susquehanna String Band and The All-Star Big Band featuring guest artist Ray Vega will make special appearances. The Potsdam Brass Quintet will kick off the musical celebration on June 25 at 7 p.m. in the Sara M. Snell Music Theater. The concert is free. The Orchestra of Northern New York, featuring the Susquehanna String Band, will perform July 1 at 7 p.m. in the Hosmer Concert Hall. Tickets may be purchased at the ONNY Box Office by calling (315) 267-3251. The All-Star Big Band, with special guest Ray Vega, is scheduled to perform July 3 at 7 p.m. in the Snell Music Theater. Tickets for the show are $5 and are available at the door. The remaining concerts are free and open to the public. They include: CYM Counselor Concert, July 2, at 7 p.m. in Snell Theater; CYM Wind Ensemble and Symphony Orchestra, July 4, at 7 p.m. in Hosmer Hall; Potsdam Wind Quintet, Aria Reed Trio and String Faculty Quartet, July 6, at 7 p.m. in Snell Theater; CYM Faculty Solo Concert, July 7, at 7 p.m. in Snell Theater; CYM Like Ensembles, July 8, at 7 p.m. in Snell Theater; CYM Honors Solo Concert, July 9, at 7 p.m. in Snell Theater; CYM Jazz Band, Jazz Ensemble, Men’s Choir and Treble Choir, July 10, at 7 p.m. in Snell Theater; CYM Harp and Piano Recital, July 11 at 10 a.m. in Snell Theater; and CYM Final Concert, July 11, at 1 p.m. in Hosmer Hall. More than 325 students are registered for Crane Youth Music, one of the finest summer programs for young musicians ages 12 through 18 in the Northeast. The Crane Youth Music staff includes Crane faculty members, as well as guest artists and teachers from the United States and Canada. Participants have the opportunity to attend instrument and voice lessons and music theory classes; perform in ensembles, bands, orchestras and choirs; and work with some of the most talented music educators and performers available. The camp provides instruction through master classes for strings – violin, viola, cello, harp and string bass; woodwinds – flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon and saxophone; bass – trumpet, French horn, euphonium, trombone and tuba; percussion; voice; and piano. All students attend master classes taught by master teachers, perform in large group ensembles and have the opportunity to receive training in music theory and aural skills.
